LEARNING SCENARIO

A customer comes in and notices that you stock a variety of pet health products in your pharmacy. She wasn’t aware that community pharmacies catered for animal health and normally travels 30 minutes to a pet store to buy flea and tick treatments for her outdoor cat that likes to roam. She decides to purchase some FRONTLINE PLUS® while she has the opportunity.

Which of the following topics should you cover to supply FRONTLINE PLUS® appropriately and showcase your expertise to make her consider your pharmacy for her future pet health needs?

Ask her the weight, age and health status of her cat

CORRECTCats should be at least 1 kg and 8 weeks old; dogs at least 2 kg and 8 weeks old. For dogs, make sure the correct size product is given for their weight.

Tell her she won’t see any fleas on her cat

INCORRECTNo product stops fleas from jumping onto pets – it’s normal to see fleas on a treated pet, as pets can pick up new fleas at any time. These will be killed within 24 hours of jumping on.

Remind her that the flea and tick protection of FRONTLINE PLUS® lasts for 4 weeks and would then have to be reapplied

CORRECTThis will kill fleas and ticks on her cat and also stop any flea eggs from hatching in her home.

Advise her FRONTLINE PLUS® won’t stop ticks attaching to her cat. However, ticks will be killed within 48 hours after contact, helping reduce the risk of tick-borne disease transmission

CORRECTShe should also check her cat regularly for ticks, and safely remove any that don’t fall off once dead with a tick remover.
