What is insomnia?

Despite having the opportunity for sleep, a person may regularly:2,9,10

  • Find it hard to go to sleep
  • Wake up several times during the night
  • Lie awake at night
  • Wake up early and not be able to go back to sleep

If these sleep problems are associated with impaired daytime functioning, such as fatigue, decreased mood, feeling irritable, finding it difficult to concentrate, or finding it hard to nap even though they are tired, they have insomnia.2,9,10

Short-term insomnia: symptoms have been present for less than 3 months9
Chronic insomnia: symptoms occur on at least 3 nights per week for 3 months or more9

Customers with chronic insomnia should be referred to their GP.
