The importance of electrolytes

Electrolytes are salts found in the body that help regulate and control the balance of fluids. They also play a vital role in conducting nervous impulses, muscle contraction, keeping the body hydrated and regulating its pH levels.

Electrolyte imbalances most commonly occur when people are severely dehydrated as a result of excessive sweating or illnesses such as vomiting or diarrhoea. Severe electrolyte imbalances can interfere with how the body functions.3

Many people believe that water alone is enough to prevent dehydration. While water rehydrates the body, it doesn't replace the essential salts required by the body for fluid balance and other functions.

Oral rehydration therapy is the mainstay of treatment to prevent or treat dehydration to restore the body's natural fluid and electrolyte balance.4
