Paracetamol or Ibuprofen?

Understanding effective pain and fever management in children

Caring for a sick child, even for a couple of days, can be exhausting. Distressed parents and caregivers may seek treatment and advice for their child from the pharmacy. By offering them appropriate, effective advice and treatment recommendations, where necessary, you can help them understand how to best support their unwell child.

Learning objectives

After completing this module, you will be able to:

  • Understand the recommended guidance for the management of mild to moderate pain and fever in children

  • Outline the key differences between ibuprofen and paracetamol

  • Advise on when to consider recommending alternative doses of ibuprofen and paracetamol for pain relief

  • Recognise red flags that could imply a more serious condition that may require referral

Product information and information on adverse event reporting is available at the end of the module.
