Schwarzkopf’s hair expert Armin Morbach believes it is very old-fashioned to say certain skin tones can only wear certain hair colours because today anything goes. However, he says that a good tip, especially for customers who are nervous about dying their hair, is to go only up only to two to three shades lighter or darker than their natural hair colour.

Skin tone

Skin tone will also have an impact. “If someone’s skin has yellow undertones, I would not go to a warm blonde or any colour that’s too close to their skin colour,” says Morbach. “There are some women who have rosy cheeks and are beautiful as natural redheads. If a natural redhead goes too purple, it could be too much of a contrast and make the redness in their skin show up more,” he explains, adding that black and red are colours that work well on all skin tones.

Eyebrow colour

The colour of a customer’s natural eyebrows can also be used as a guide for how light or dark to go. “If a customer has quite light eyebrows, I wouldn’t go too dark with their hair colour. If a blonde wants to go dark, a little trick is to put some colour on the eyebrows with a toothbrush to make them match their new hair colour,” says Morbach.
