module menu icon Colouring hair in pregnancy

Your pregnant customers will be pleased to hear they can colour their hair during pregnancy. Some studies have found that very high doses of the chemicals in hair dyes may cause harm. However, these doses are massive compared with the very low amount of chemicals a woman is exposed to when colouring her hair.

According to Dr Meredith: “Colouring your hair when you are pregnant is perfectly safe”. However, she adds that some women can be very concerned about it, so for them it might be better to avoid the source of anxiety by not colouring their hair at all. Alternatively, they may want to wait until after the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, when the risk of chemical substances harming the baby is much lower. Highlighting the hair by putting the colourant only on to strands of hair also reduces any risk. The chemicals used are only absorbed by the hair, and not by the scalp or bloodstream.
