Many managers lack the crucial attributes of leadership, in spite of their job title. 

There are key leadership skills that apply to all leaders, but as you progress through the management structure, additional and differentiating skills are required. Self-awareness – the ability to reflect and learn from every situation – is the true sign of a leader.

A new manager knows they have much to learn. The starting point is a strong desire and passion to learn. Effective leaders do not need to learn all the skills. However, they should be confident enough to recognise their weaknesses and develop their teams to address those weak links.

3P leadership model

The ‘3P’ approach, developed by Jo Owen, is a simple, practical and no-nonsense approach to developing the basic leadership skills required by new managers. It is based on three key elements: focusing on people, being positive and being professional.
