Community pharmacy needs to be able to prepare for and respond effectively to changes to drive the profession forward in a new era of technology and cost savings, demonstrating its resourcefulness.
There are a variety of factors that may result in a need for change. These include responding to difficult trading conditions, improved/ changing technology, pressure from customers and their shopping/health needs and government initiatives. Making changes in behaviour can be difficult – think of all those New Year’s resolutions that are broken after a couple of months – but being prepared for that change and understanding the different responses may improve the transition process and the chances of success.
From government plans for community pharmacy in 2016/17 and beyond, some of the key areas that they are consulting on include internet pharmacy and more modern ways of medicines receipt, such as ordering online, click and collect, clinical pharmacists in different roles and the use of technology for dispensing. Key aims include making efficiency savings and to change the way pharmacies work, such as Healthy Living Pharmacies.
Whether you work in a multiple, independent or small chain of pharmacies, there is likely to be an impact on your pharmacy practice. This CPD module considers how to be prepared for change and what you can do to effectively support changes to the way you and your colleagues work. You will need to be ready to deal with changes effectively so that business objectives can still be met, excellent service is still provided and the team are all committed to making the pharmacy a success.
