Systems are available to automate MDS dispensing, and can even split tablets for fractional doses. MDS is possible using pouch systems where a single sealed sachet contains all the medicines for one dose. This is particularly efficient when used for the most frequent dispensary lines, capable of 52-54 multidose trays per hour (around 14 patients), with an error rate of one pouch in 10,000. Blister tray dispensing for compliance aids can also be automated.
A minimum of 100 compliance aid patients is considered appropriate for investment. Up to 80 per cent of costs can then be saved by moving dispensing to a hub, in part by reducing staff.
Entry point investment can be from around £60,000, which compares favourably to staff costs over five years, along with the freeing up of staff time. Potentially up to 60,000 items per month is possible with a small team at a central dispensing hub.
As hubs in small chains will usually be at the same address as an existing licensed pharmacy premises, an additional responsible pharmacist may be unnecessary.Â
