Suggested minimum dispensing levels for automation range from 3,000 to 8,000 items a month, depending on the level of automation selected. However, any decision on whether a pharmacy would benefit from installing automated dispensing equipment cannot be based simply on prescription numbers.

Many other aspects of the business need to be taken into account, including:

  • Acute vs repeat prescription numbers
  • The dispensing mix: cartons, liquids, fridge lines, controlled drugs, compliance aids and monitored dosage system, and appliances
  • Professional services provision (eg, MURs, NMS)
  • The ratio of prescription to OTC business
  • Footfall and the timing of busy and quieter periods
  • Premises layout – front shop, dispensary and storage space
  • Relationships with local GP practices and care homes
  • Staffing: numbers, expertise and interests
  • If a pharmacy is part of a small chain, whether it is a dispensing hub.

Having considered whether the business is likely to benefit, there are two further key considerations:

  • Whether the aim is to manage increased dispensing volume or to free up staff time for professional services
  • Which machine to select.
