Suggested minimum dispensing levels for automation range from 3,000 to 8,000 items a month, depending on the level of automation selected. However, any decision on whether a pharmacy would benefit from installing automated dispensing equipment cannot be based simply on prescription numbers.
Many other aspects of the business need to be taken into account, including:
- Acute vs repeat prescription numbers
- The dispensing mix: cartons, liquids, fridge lines, controlled drugs, compliance aids and monitored dosage system, and appliances
- Professional services provision (eg, MURs, NMS)
- The ratio of prescription to OTC business
- Footfall and the timing of busy and quieter periods
- Premises layout – front shop, dispensary and storage space
- Relationships with local GP practices and care homesÂ
- Staffing: numbers, expertise and interests
- If a pharmacy is part of a small chain, whether it is a dispensing hub.
Having considered whether the business is likely to benefit, there are two further key considerations:
- Whether the aim is to manage increased dispensing volume or to free up staff time for professional services
- Which machine to select.
