03: Find out the patient’s beliefs and concerns about their health, illness and treatments

You may not agree with these, and they may not be evidence-based, but you should give patients the opportunity to communicate their beliefs and concerns to you. Equally, patients may know more than you expect so it is important not to patronise the patient or offer premature advice.

04: Remember that the patient is the expert on their own health and lifestyle

Just as you are an expert in medicines and advice, a patient is an expert on their own health and lifestyle. It is important to remember this during a consultation.
