  1. Smile warmly to greet customers.
  2. Show that you are listening by maintaining good eye contact. Try to avoid raised eyebrows that may signify alarm or surprise at what they are saying.
  3. Keep the arms uncrossed, but make small gestures to emphasise points as appropriate.
  4. Occasional nodding of the head shows that you are listening, and encourages the customer to continue talking.
  5. Consider where you are physically – the counter can be a barrier between you and the customer. Going round to where they are, or the area of the shop that displays the sorts of products you are discussing, can help to remove that physical barrier.
