module menu icon Gathering information and advising customers

For this session, use our older people's health article, as well as other sources of information to strengthen your knowledge of older people's health issues. This will give you more insight and information to pass on to your customers. You can use information sources you may have in the pharmacy, such as other articles, OTC medicines guides and manufacturer literature.

Take time to think and chat about what contribution you can make to the health of your older customers. Start with your pharmacy and make sure there are places to sit down and that the floor is devoid of clutter. Health and safety issues are essential in a pharmacy, but older people can so easily trip and fall.

For further inspiration, visit the websites listed in the 'information sources' section.

You will find plenty of information in the article on older people's health. Which areas of health does the article identify as being important for the pharmacy team's involvement? Also, think about the following issues and discuss in your team:

  • What types of physical activity are recommended for older people? How much should they be doing?
  • What are the five main causes of premature death (before the age of 75 years)? How can your older customers reduce the risk of each of these five conditions?
  • What are the 10 main risk factors for dying prematurely? What healthy lifestyle changes can older people make to minimise these risk factors?
  • What are the alcohol guidelines for maximum amounts? Are they different for older people?
  • Which vitamins and minerals might older people lack and why?
  • How could an older person improve their intake of vitamin B12, vitamin D and vitamin C?
  • Which supplements do you stock in the pharmacy that are formulated for older people?
