Tadalafil POM to P switch
In March, tadalafil (a phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor), available as Cialis Together, was reclassified by the MHRA as a Pharmacy-only medicine, enabling it to be purchased OTC by men aged over 18 years after a consultation with the pharmacist. This is the second POM to P switch for an erectile dysfunction medicine and comes six years after sildenafil (Viagra Connect) was similarly reclassified.
Cialis Together became commercially available in June, with its duration of effect being up to 36 hours (sildenafil is around 4 hours). The dose is one 10mg tablet (also the maximum daily dose) at least 30 minutes before anticipated sexual activity. It is important to note that although most men are likely to achieve an erection with the first or second use, some may need to take tadalafil a number of times before they achieve a sufficient erection for satisfactory sexual activity.
Tadalafil cannot be sold to men with, or at risk of, severe cardiovascular disorders, severe liver or kidney failure or with interacting medication. If the product is used regularly (at least twice weekly), then men should be advised to speak to their doctor about whether a daily regimen using a lower dose may be more suitable.
