The quality that people tend to value most in their leaders is the ability to motivate others. In order to do that, leaders need to fundamentally understand their people and what drives them. There is also the implicit need for a healthy level of self-understanding and self-awareness from anyone in a leadership position.
Fundamental behaviours that describe effective leaders in this area include:
- Supporting others while providing an appropriate level of challenge and developmental stretch
- Recognising that leadership is a team game, not an individual event
- Building commitment and engagement through the 3T model
- Building strong networks outside the pharmacy with GPs and other local organisations. These
can include local health system managers, but don’t overlook local authorities and consumer-led support groups - Forming a strong team focused on the well described goals of the business.
