Training your team and ensuring everyone's knowledge is up-to-date are important CPD triggers. We suggest that you get the team together for a training session based on the activities below and discuss the various ways in which you can offer customers and patients added care in this category.

Reflection

• Do we create an effective display of products for seasonal ailments?
• Is the pharmacy team confident in its ability to pass on tips for helping to reduce calorie intake over the festive season?
• Are they confident about advising on the relief of indigestion before and after eating and drinking too much?
• Do we give practical advice on how to manage food and drink consumption at parties?
• Are we confident in helping customers or their family members with SAD?

Training checklist

Ensure your support staff understand the following key points:

• The importance of watching out for people who are miserable during the festive season and/or suffer from SAD
• The importance of reminding people to ensure they have adequate stocks of prescription medicines for the holiday
• How many units of alcohol there are in different types of alcoholic drinks
• The importance of drinking plenty of water at party time and if diarrhoea strikes
• Specific hygiene tips to reduce passing on colds and coughs, norovirus, and similar GI upsets
• When to refer customers to the pharmacist.

Action. I will ensure:

• Consider how we can further raise our profile as a centre of prevention and treatment of seasonal ailments
• Ensure that our seasonal window displays give passers-by informative messages about what we can do to help
• Ensure that we make some time to celebrate Christmas together as a pharmacy team.

Practice points

• Pick a seasonal theme for one or more of your pharmacy windows. What about first aid kits and the importance of stocking up on medicines for the holiday period?
• What opportunities are there in your area for getting exercise over Christmas? Have the details available about local walks and gym opening times during the holiday period.
