  • Earlier clinical trials found good evidence to support the effectiveness of benzoyl peroxide. However, a more recent systematic review concluded that although results provide some evidence of reduced lesion count, the evidence is not robust enough for firm conclusions and further research is needed.1–6
  • A double-blind, multi-centre comparative study found benzoyl peroxide and potassium hydroxyquinoline sulphate to be more effective than benzoyl peroxide alone.7
  • While there is some evidence to support the effectiveness of antimicrobials, part of their value may lie in the attention-placebo effect, generated by patients participating in an active routine to manage their problem.8,9
  • In a double-blind clinical trial, nicotinamide was found to be as effective as 1 per cent clindamycin gel in mild-to-moderate acne.10 But there appear to be no direct comparisons of efficacy between nicotinamide and benzoyl peroxide.
  • There is little evidence of the effectiveness of abrasive preparations.1
