Nicotinamide is the physiologically active amide of nicotinic acid. Dietary deficiency can lead to a range of symptoms, including skin conditions.
It is claimed to have anti-inflammatory activity, although its mechanism of action is unknown. It might act directly on inflammatory mediators, perhaps through inhibition of neutrophil chemotaxis.
Side effects include dryness, peeling and irritation similar to those produced by benzoyl peroxide; the same precautions should therefore be taken.

Nicotinamide is available as a 4 per cent gel. There are two products, marketed by the same company and with apparently identical formulations, but one is licensed as a P medicine and is nearly twice as expensive as the GSL product.
