module menu icon Managing tension headaches

The management approach for a headache really depends on the type.

Tension headaches will often get better without any treatment, but for those who want to take something, a simple painkiller such as paracetamol or an NSAID is the best option for occasional sufferers. Self care measures such as exercise and relaxation techniques can also be helpful. For those experiencing frequent headaches that are tension-like in nature, it may be wise to suggest keeping a headache diary as this can help pinpoint possible triggers such as missing meals, poor posture because of working at a desk and tiredness. Acupuncture can be beneficial for those who get frequent tension headaches, but opioids – including those in combination analgesics – are not advised, unless recommended by a GP.
