In addition to ibuprofen and paracetamol suspensions, some products are marketed specifically for teething pain:
- Gels and a liquid containing the local anaesthetic, lidocaine, plus the antiseptics chlorocresol, cetylpridinium chloride and cetylkonium chloride, either singly or combinations, depending on brand. They should be applied no more frequently than every three hours, to a maximum of six times daily.
- A traditional herbal remedy (THR), first marketed in 1867, consisting of powders impregnated with tincture of matricaria, from a species of chamomile flowers. Traditional uses of matricaria include as a sedative, analgesic and anti-inflammatory. The normal dose is half a powder, for babies from 3-6 months of age, or one powder, from age six months, placed on the tongue up to twice daily.
