Functions of the skin
The skin is the largest organ in the body and consists of 2 layers - the epidermis (outer layer) and the dermis (inner layer). Healthy, hydrated skin has a natural barrier that's made up of tightly packed, well-hydrated cells. These are enclosed in a matrix of lipids, or fatty substances. This barrier works to reduce water loss from the skin.
