Q: What are the symptoms of constipation?

A: 

  • Bowel frequency reduced below normal for the individual.
  • Straining in attempt to defaecate, with possible abdominal pain and a feeling of incomplete emptying of the bowel.
  • Stools harder than normal. 
  • Sometimes abdominal bloating and discomfort. 
  • Stools may be specked with bright blood, due to bleeding from haemorrhoids caused by straining.
  • Children with constipation may be irritable and lose their appetite.
