Tobacco smoke contains nicotine and about 4,000 other products, including tar components (aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, phenols and other compounds), alcohols, amines, nitrosamines, ammonia, nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide.
All are hazardous to health, contributing to a wide range of conditions, including serious respiratory diseases, cancer of the lung, buccal cavity, larynx, oesophagus and internal organs, ischaemic heart disease, and circulatory problems that can result in limb amputation.
