The presentations described below are for use in areas of low water fluoride levels and usually on the advice of a dentist.
Mouth rinse
Contains 0.05% sodium fluoride (225 ppm fluoride). Licensed for use in adults and children over six years. Provided with a measuring cap, which is half-filled and the mouth rinsed for one minute once daily.
Tablets
Two strengths are available: providing 1mg fluoride ion for children six years and over; and 0.5mg, for children 3-6 years. Dosage is adjusted depending on fluoride level in local water, and should not be used if it is more than 0.7 ppm.
Fluodrops
For children age six months to three years. A measured 0.15ml dose contains 0.25mg fluoride ion. Dosage dependent on age; should not be used if local water fluoride level exceeds 0.3ppm.
Fluorosis overdose from chronic use or too high a level of fluoride intake can result in fluorosis. This manifests in the mildest, and most common, form as faint white lines or specks on the teeth. Slightly more severe cases appear as white mottled patches, and severe fluorosis is characterized by brown discoloration and brittle, pitted and rough enamel. T
he highest risk of development is in children up to six years of age. Fluorosis is irreversible, but generally does no harm.
