Pharmacist to run London marathon in support of Elsie Dot Stancombe charity

A community pharmacist will run the London marathon this month to raise money for a charity set up in memory of Elsie Dot Stancombe who was tragically killed in the Southport knife attacks.

Joanne Matthews (pictured), from Birkdale, Southport, is running in aid of Elsie’s Story, set up by her parents Jenni and David which aims to support children in the area.

Seven-year-old Elsie was killed at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport in July 2024 along with nine-year-old Alice da Silva Aguiar and six-year-old Bebe King.

Matthews, who has worked for Rowlands Pharmacy over the last decade, said the “completely amazing” spirit in the community inspired her to run the marathon on April 27 and “do more for the families” who she said have been “incredibly brave”.

“We're a very tight knit, close community, and I want to raise as much money as possible to support them,” she said.

“It’s very inspiring what they're doing in the name of their daughter, to leave a legacy for her. I think they're going to do amazing things in Elsie’s name."

Revealing Rowlands has donated money to the charity, Matthews added: “When my two girls were growing up, they had the freedom and space to find their passions. As a parent, grandparent and member of the community I live and work in, I know how important it is to offer that same support and encouragement to young people today.”
