CPPE ran a series of Focal Point events on antibacterials earlier this year.
A 2011 report from the chief medical officer, Professor Dame Sally Davies, highlighted the threat of antimicrobial resistance. In September 2013 the Department of Health published the ‘UK Five Year Antimicrobial Resistance Strategy 2013 to 2018’.
During the winter months, pharmacies are likely to see lots of patients with viral and bacterial infections. Pharmacy professionals can support the aims of the DH strategy in a number of ways:
- By ensuring patients are referred to prescribers appropriately
- Through dialogue with prescribers about appropriate choice of antibacterials
- By counselling patients about how and when to take their antibiotics.
The Focal Point events considered:
- How pharmacy teams can support other health professionals and patients to optimise patient outcomes in antibiotic therapy, while minimising harm
- The application of antimicrobial guidelines to ensure appropriate antibacterial use
- How to reduce the impact of antimicrobial resistance and healthcare-associated infections
- Practical issues relating to antibacterial treatment.
About focal point events
CPPE Focal Point events are designed for community-based pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. Learners can use the materials at CPPE tutor-led events or within their own learning communities.
