Side effects

As people with hypertension are often symptom-free, the side effects of treatment may affect them more than their hypertension does. It is important to acknowledge this and explain the risks associated with untreated hypertension. When discussing which medicine to use, you should explain the common and serious side effects as well as their incidence. This will allow the person to make an informed choice on which medicine will suit them.

For more information, you can access the CPPE NMS antihypertensive tool.

Monitoring treatment

NICE recommends using clinic BP to monitor the effects of treatment. Standing and sitting BP should be measured in people with:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Symptoms of postural hypotension
  • Aged 80 and over.

People who want to self-monitor should be advised to use home blood pressure monitoring (HBPM), and training and advice should be provided.
