Blood pressure targets
Target blood pressures should be discussed with people with hypertension, using the principles of shared decision making.
NICE guidelines suggest the following targets:
- Under 80 years of age: below 140/90 mmHg
- Over 80 years of age: below 150/90 mmHg.
There are occasions when people have different blood pressure targets. Tight control of blood pressure can have benefits, such as reducing the risks associated with hypertension and improving morbidity and mortality.
The benefits and risks associated with tight control of blood pressure should be communicated clearly to patients, and a shared decision made on their target blood pressure. These discussions are usually held with specialists. However, it is important for you to understand that there may be different targets to ensure people are supported in their ongoing self management.
