Learning scenario 1
Amil Shah is 52 years old. He has come to collect a prescription for his wife, who has been told her blood pressure is too high and that she needs to take medication. As he has never had his own blood pressure checked, you offer to check it for him. He agrees and using your standard procedures you record his blood pressure (no significant difference between arms) as 146/79mmHg.
What advice would you give to Mr Shah? You tell him that:
- He may have high blood pressure, but further readings are needed to see if this is the case
- He has high blood pressure and he needs to see his GP immediately
- His blood pressure is a bit high, but it is nothing to worry about. You advise him that he should try to lose some weight and stop smoking
- His blood pressure is a bit high, but it is nothing to worry about and no further checks are needed
