How is hypertension currently defined?

The normal or ideal adult blood pressure is between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg. The NICE definitions of the stages of blood pressure are given in table 1.

In most people elevated blood pressure does not cause any symptoms, but continued raised blood pressure increases the risk of several significant negative health outcomes including stroke, heart attack, heart failure, kidney disease and cognitive decline. Early detection and management through lifestyle interventions and, where necessary, medication can be very effective in reducing these adverse outcomes associated with uncontrolled blood pressure.

There are many opportunities to identify people who may have high blood pressure who will need further evaluation to ensure the correct diagnosis is made, and for subsequent treatment and ongoing monitoring and support.
