Certain female population groups may be relatively small, but are nonetheless important when it comes to the rollout of the Covid-19 vaccination.
- Breastfeeding women may be offered the vaccine following consideration of their clinical need for immunisation against the virus. While there is no safety data regarding Covid-19 vaccines in breastfeeding women, there is no known risk associated with the administration of non-live vaccines such as those being used to protect against Covid-19. It is also important to consider the developmental and health benefits of breastfeeding against the risks of Covid-19 infection
- Women who are trying to fall pregnant may also have concerns, but there is no evidence to suggest that the vaccines affect fertility, and hence there is no need to avoid pregnancy after being immunised.
Some women may ask about the possibility of having just one vaccine dose, given the high level of protection that is conferred, but it is important that the two-dose regimen is adhered to as there is otherwise a risk of protection waning.
