module menu icon The five rights of the second victim

Where second victims are identified, a set of five rights of the second victim, illustrated by the acronym TRUST has been developed:

  • Treatment that is just
  • Respect
  • Understanding and compassion
  • Supportive care
  • Transparency and the opportunity to contribute to learning.

In order to deliver these five rights, organisations should have robust policies ensuring investigations are open and transparent. These investigations should involve all parties, including those directly involved in errors, since they best understand what happened and may be best placed to suggest solutions.
