Plan, do, study, act (PDSA) cycles allow for potential improvements to be approached methodically by providing a cyclical structure for implementing and observing changes.

The use of PDSA can be triggered by:

  • Incident analysis after a patient safety incident
  • Considering making a change in a process or in the pharmacy environment
  • A new process being introduced
  • Wanting to monitor the impact of changes that you have made
  • A scheduled plan for revisiting a process, e.g. repeat every six months
  • The use of PRIMO.
