A public assessment report examining the benefits and risks of over-the-counter (OTC) stimulant laxatives found a number of issues for concern. These included:

  • Overuse by people with eating disorders
  • Inappropriate use for weight loss
  • Long-term use by the elderly
  • Inappropriate use in children.
  • Overuse of stimulant laxatives can lead to serious fluid and electrolyte disturbances and disruption of intestinal function, and fatalities have occurred. Consequently, in August 2020, the MHRA published a package of measures to ensure that stimulant laxatives are used appropriately and safely. The changes included pack size restrictions, revised recommendations for use in children, harmonisation of indications and new safety warnings.

Pharmacy teams should explain the new posology (dosage) and indications for short-term use only, and reinforce warnings that stimulant laxatives do not aid weight loss for both GSL and
    P stimulant laxatives.
