There are different ways of assessing safety culture, ranging in terms of how in-depth they are, and the different tools that have been developed for this purpose. To cover all of them would make for a very long discussion, so just a couple are covered over the next two pages.
It is important first to highlight the difference between measures of safety climate, which focus on tangible objects and practices, and safety culture, which looks at the underlying values. Safety climate is easier to assess and target for change, but whether safety climate can be changed on its own, or whether the ingrained safety culture has to be dealt with directly, is a matter for debate.
