  • Help people select a suitable sunscreen product in an acceptable price range
  • Remind people to use the UV index to decide whether sun protection is needed
  • Advise on avoiding sunburn, especially in children and young adults, to reduce the risk of skin cancer in later life
  • Check awareness of vitamin D requirements and advise on supplements
  • Everyone, especially people with a previous history of skin cancer, should monitor their skin regularly. The Euro Melanoma website has a good guide, with pictures and tips
  • If a patient thinks he/she has a growing mole, work through the ABCDE checklist with them and suggest they take a series of photos to see if it changes. Including an item of standard size next to the mole – such as a 20p coin – is helpful to see if it has grown or changed shape
  • Obtain leaflets, posters and other resources and read the material available from key websites, such as: Skcin, Sunsafe Workplaces and Sunsafe Schools.
