Scenarios
During Anjali’s annual flu vaccination appointment, you notice the strong smell of smoke on her clothes. You know that she was diagnosed with COPD three years ago, but has previously said: “I’ve smoked for so many years now it’s too late to stop”.
- How would you open a conversation with Anjali about stopping smoking and support her to stop if she is ready?
Yin comes to your pharmacy after being diagnosed with COPD. During the review, she asks you what other support is available in the area for people living with COPD.
- How can you help Yin?
Practice points
- Reflect on the medicines optimisation services you offer to people living with COPD. Create an action plan for how you can engage people with your services
- Consider how you currently promote smoking cessation to people living with COPD. Plan and undertake a training session with your team to enable them to engage people with relevant messages about the benefits of stopping smoking if they have COPD.
