The Medical Research Council (MRC) dyspnoea scale is a simple scale used to classify degree of perceived breathlessness and categorise COPD. It consists of statements on the individual’s perception of how breathlessness impacts them, from grade 1: “I only get breathless with strenuous exercise” to grade 5: “I am too breathless to leave the house”. It is a useful scale as poor lung function does not correspond to the degree of breathlessness experienced, or to how someone is affected by the disease.
