Some people may have an overlap of asthma concurrently with their COPD, for example undiagnosed asthma or known previous asthma but with a history of smoking. It is important for people living with asthma-COPD overlap to have both disease states treated appropriately. People living with asthma should always have an inhaled corticosteroid included in their therapy.

NICE guideline NG115 states: ‘Whenever possible, use features from the history and examination (such as those listed in Table 2 below) to differentiate COPD from asthma.
