Although any new DMARD treatment is prescribed in secondary care, patients are usually given a prescription to be dispensed in community pharmacies. It is important to find out if the medication is new and be able to answer any queries or concerns patients may have. Common queries include:
- Which medications are used for disease modification or for short-term symptom control
- How to adhere to complex medication regimens
- Possible side effects of medication
- How to take analgesics etc. during a flare-up
- What support aids are available to help them open their medication
- Potential interactions between rheumatological medication and other prescribed or purchased therapies, including complementary and alternative medicine products
- When medication should be stopped (e.g. during an infection).
