Initial and ongoing management should involve psychosocial and environmental interventions to reduce distress in the person living with dementia. These should be personalised to promote engagement, pleasure and interest and could include:

  • Taking part in activities the person enjoyed before their diagnosis. For example music, art, exercising and socialising with friends
  • Psychological therapies with professionals, such as cognitive stimulation therapy or reminiscence therapy. Some regions may be able to support this in the home environment
  • Adapting the environment to ensure the temperature, noise levels or brightness are not causing distress
  • Helping the person to have a daily routine.
