It is also important to ensure the pharmacy environment is as inclusive and dementia friendly as possible. Consider the following:

  • Having a quiet space available for anyone who might be feeling anxious or confused
  • Ensure signs are clear with a good contrast between text and background
  • Consider having plain flooring as highly reflective flooring can cause confusion
  • An obvious seating area can be helpful whilst people wait.
  • A useful dementia-friendly environment checklist is available from the Alzheimer’s Society and detailed information on design choices for dementia-friendly environments in primary care, entitled Developing supportive design for people with dementia, can be found via The Kings Fund.
