When dealing with patients on lithium it is also important to find out:
- When lithium levels were last checked. This should be in the last three or six months, as appropriate
- What other blood tests they have had in the last six months. Kidney and electrolytes including calcium, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and thyroid function should be checked every six months
- Whether they have a lithium information booklet, which is usually purple
- When BMI or weight was last measured, which should be every six months
- Whether they are taking any over the counter medicines or remedies
- Has anyone explained to them:
- How to know if the lithium level in the body is too high (e.g. upset stomach) and how to prevent this (e.g. adequate fluid intake)
- What to do if a dose of lithium is missed
- How to stay physically healthy when taking lithium.
