The risk of developing some types of dementia can be reduced, or the onset of progression delayed, through lifestyle changes. Interventions and programmes that promote behaviour changes in mid-life could lead to fewer people developing dementia later.

Pharmacy professionals are in a great position to raise awareness and promote healthy lifestyle changes to their local community. The following are some examples of lifestyle changes that pharmacies can offer advice on, which can help reduce the risk of patients developing dementia and slow its progression:

  • Smoking cessation
  • Keeping alcohol consumption within recommended limits
  • Weight management
  • Regular exercise
  • Healthy diet
  • Exercising the mind, e.g. completing puzzles or engaging in social activities.
  • The Alzheimer’s Society has developed a guide on how to reduce the risk of developing dementia. It provides practical advice and useful tips on how to achieve the change an individual may want.
