There are many ways in which pharmacy professionals and the wider pharmacy team can support patients at every stage of their renal disease. This can include offering them the following information:

Patient support groups

It can feel frightening and lonely for some patients with end stage renal disease who require a transplant. However, there are many patient support groups available that pharmacy teams can direct patients to. Some may be local, while others can be larger, national groups. 

Travel advice

  • Before booking an overseas trip, check with the transplant centre
  • Take medicines and some extra in case of delays
  • Ideally carry medicines in hand luggage
  • Check if antimalarial therapy is required and, if so, check doses against renal function
  • Avoid uncooked food, raw food, street vendors, salad and raw seafood as these are high risks for infection
  • Drink bottled water and only use ice cubes made from bottled water.
