  • Avoid taking multivitamins as they have fat soluble vitamins (e.g. vitamin A) which can cause itching and accumulate in the body
  • Avoid potassium supplements
  • Avoid dispersible medicines in general due to their salt content
  • Avoid over-the-counter NSAIDs and analgesic doses of aspirin due to risk of acute kidney injury
  • Paracetamol can be taken on its own
  • Movicol/fybogel should be considered carefully due to the fluid required, but this may not be an issue if the renal function is good
  • St John’s Wort should be avoided when taking certain medicines, such as ciclosporin.
  • It’s important to be aware of the complications a renal transplant patient could have and of the side effects of the medicines they are taking. A patient may come to a pharmacy for advice as they feel unwell and have a temperature, which could be an infection. Renal transplant patients will be taking immunosuppressant medicines and they will need to be referred to their transplant team for investigation and treatment.
