Giving up smoking is the most valuable intervention in the management of COPD.
Exercise is recommended, though within the patient’s own limitations, i.e. it is OK to become a little short of breath but not to push it too far. As a general rule, someone with COPD should aim to walk for 20 to 30 minutes, three to four times a week, and those who are immobile should try and do upper body exercises such as twisting and arm stretches.
Another significant reminder pharmacy staff can provide to COPD patients is around the importance of getting their flu and pneumococcal vaccinations.

- Do you offer a smoking cessation service in your pharmacy? If not, are you confident that you know where you can refer people to locally?
