Although people will receive these treatments in specialist centres, they are all add-on therapies and therefore other treatments should be continued alongside. Specialist medicines should be added to the patient’s medication record so interactions can be monitored or supporting advice given.

Specialist treatments which may be seen in practice but are not recommended, mainly due to a lack of sufficient evidence of benefit and/or efficacy and safety, include:

  • Colchicine and intravenous immunoglobulin
  • Immunotherapy
  • Continuous subcutaneous terbutaline infusion
  • Macrolides.
