Maintenance and reliever therapy (MART) is a form of combined ICS and LABA treatment in which a single inhaler, containing both ICS and a fast-acting LABA, is used for both daily maintenance therapy and the relief of symptoms as required. MART is only available for ICS and LABA combinations in which the LABA has a fast-acting component, e.g. formoterol.

Two systematic reviews have shown that MART can reduce the risk of asthma exacerbations requiring steroid tablets for patients who are not well-controlled on ICS alone, and who have a history of asthma exacerbations. When this management option is introduced the total regular dose of daily ICS should not be decreased. Patients taking additional rescue doses of their combination inhaler once a day or more on a regular basis should have their treatment reviewed.
