As the underlying pathology of asthma varies, different triggers will affect people with asthma. Individual triggers should be discussed with people so they are aware of what affects them, and explore ways of reducing the impact of their individual triggers. Occupational triggers such as chemicals should also be considered, especially where asthma symptoms improve when away from work. Triggers include: 

  • Respiratory tract infections
  • Pollution
  • Mould and fungi
  • Indoor environment, such as cleaning products, soft furnishing materials or open fires
  • Cigarette smoke
  • Exercise
  • Dust mites
  • Emotions, including stress and anxiety
  • Alcohol 
  • Food
  • Medicines such as aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) 
  • Recreational drugs
  • Female hormones
  • Animals
  • Weather, can be hot and/or cold.
  • Change privacy settings
